AquaFence
Flood Protection Solution Becomes First To Receive New
Standards Certification.
Certification improves insurance possibilities and widens
scope for the next generation flood protection solution.
The Norwegian designed AquaFence demountable flood protection solution
has been approved by Hamburg University of Technology - Institute of
River & Coastal Engineering, for the Performance Certificate – ‘Standalone Movable Flood Abatement System AquaFence V1200’. This high level approval, with global recognition, was gained over 4 months of intensive, specially designed practical and scientific testing, the first of its kind in the world making AquaFence the first such system to gain this important approval, strengthening its position as a high-quality, next generation flood protection solution.
“We are delighted to have received this approval as it recognises the many strengths that the AquaFence system brings to the world of flood protection whilst providing a hard to ignore statement that the system really is up to the job,” comments Helge Krogenes, Chairman, AquaFence AS. “Several solutions advertise with approvals but this new approval process is the only one where the system is thoroughly tested in the water.”
Testing for the Performance Certificate was done by The Hydraulic Laboratory
of the Centre of Climate Adaption Research (KLIFF) and involved the construction
of a specially designed 15x12m2 concrete basin for the live water tests. This
ensured that the certification would match the conditions set out by the German
standards introduced by BWK_Merkblatt in 2005 and the BSI PAS II.
By setting the level based on these standards, Hamburg University of Technology has created a certification process that ensures only the highest quality flood protection systems will pass. In being the first to receive this certification, AquaFence has not only been proven as a rugged, highly reliable system that is easy to deploy, but has also been rubber-stamped for use by government and local authorities. At the same time, the certification also means that using AquaFence could enable better insurance premiums.
“The implications of receiving this certification are far reaching,” explains Michael Czernetzki of AquaFence GmbH. “Having based the testing procedure on very high standards for demountable flood protection, the certification sends a clear message that AquaFence is thoroughly tested and proven. The tests covered everything from hydrostatic and hydrodynamic stress resistance to the system’s deployment, durability and even documentation. All bases and every possible area for failure were covered, and AquaFence passed with flying colours.”
AquaFence
is a proven system designed to protect areas of just a few metres up to a number
of kilometres, at risk of repeated flooding, for instance, farms, whole streets
and towns. It is generally used away from property, for river and sea defence,
although its flexible design means an AquaFence flood barrier can be used almost
anywhere, for instance in gateways.
