AQUAFENCE TIMELINE
Three decades of progress
1999
Founding
AquaFence was founded in Norway with a vision to revolutionize flood protection. The company’s mission from day one was to engineer deployable flood barriers that remain invisible until needed, yet stand firm against extreme floods.
2005
Product Launch
After years of R&D (since 1997) in collaboration with Norwegian agencies and engineers, the AquaFence flood barrier entered full production. The system was refined over a ten-year period to ensure reliability in real flood conditions.
2007
International Expansion
AquaFence expanded internationally, opening offices in Norway, Germany, the UK, Sweden, and the U.S. to meet growing demand. This growth brought AquaFence’s proven Nordic solutions to flood-prone communities and businesses across Europe and the United States.
2011
Major Flood Deployment
AquaFence proved its capabilities during the 2011 Midwest floods. Approximately 7,000 feet of AquaFence barriers were deployed in Fargo, North Dakota, protecting critical facilities (including a hospital and utility infrastructure) from the Red River’s floodwaters.
2012
Post-Sandy Adoption
After Hurricane Sandy devastated the U.S. East Coast, AquaFence systems protected several high-profile sites. Their success in safeguarding critical New York City infrastructure cemented AquaFence’s reputation as a reliable defense and accelerated global demand for mobile floodwalls.
2013
Top Certifications and Production in Latvia
AquaFence’s FloodWall earned the highest certification in the industry after rigorous year-long testing by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and FM Global. The system achieved the ANSI/FM 2510 standard (FM Approvals Platinum Level), validating its ability to withstand severe flood conditions and meet strict insurer criteria. Production of all AquaFence flood-protection systems moved to a modern plant in Latvia.
2015
Protecting Boston's Port
At Boston Harbor, AquaFence protected Massport’s critical pump stations and electrical infrastructure from storm surge. The deployable FloodWall system helped preserve daily operations while maintaining the site’s waterfront character.
2022
Hurricane Deployment at Tampa General
At Tampa General Hospital, AquaFence mobile barriers protected the campus from a 7-foot storm surge during major hurricanes. The system helped the hospital remain operational, supporting critical patient care when continuity mattered most.
2024
National Spotlight
AquaFence barriers gained widespread attention after shielding Tampa General Hospital through major hurricanes. Video of the hospital’s 9-foot AquaFence holding back storm surge went viral, highlighting the barrier’s strength under Category 4 conditions. This year, industry experts also named AquaFence’s system one of the “Top 10 Transformative Products” in climate resilience.
2026
Global Scaling
AquaFence is protecting hundreds of sites across 24 U.S. states and dozens of countries in Europe and Asia. From Fortune 500 corporate campuses and major airports to military bases and water treatment plants, AquaFence solutions safeguard an estimated $50+ billion in assets. Designed for rapid deployment by small teams, each barrier is fully reusable for decades – delivering unmatched ROI and reliability in flood protection.
