From recovery to resilience: Allegro Condominium strengthens its flood protection

Following extensive damage from Hurricane Ian, Allegro Condominium in Naples, Florida, invested in a comprehensive AquaFence system designed to help protect its residents, homes and critical building infrastructure against future storm surge and flooding.
Customer
Allegro is a 14-story, 76-unit beachfront condominium located on Gulf Shore Boulevard in Naples, Florida. Its coastal location provides residents with direct access to the Gulf, but also leaves the property exposed to storm surge and flooding during severe weather.
Following Hurricane Ian, Allegro’s leadership, board and residents made a long-term commitment to improving the resilience of the property. Rather than focusing only on recovery, the condominium association began looking for a proactive solution that could help reduce the impact of future storms.

Challenge
When Hurricane Ian struck Southwest Florida in September 2022, approximately 38 inches of water entered the Allegro property.
The flooding affected the ground floor and disabled essential building systems, including the generator, fire panel, electrical panel and other electrical components. Drywall and flooring also had to be removed and replaced, and the damage affected operations throughout the building.
In the years following the storm, the Allegro community invested more than $15 million in repairing and rebuilding the property.
Allegro needed a solution that could protect more than individual doors, garages and other vulnerable openings. The association wanted comprehensive protection for the residences, common areas and critical infrastructure required to keep the building functioning.
The solution also had to meet local engineering, planning, aesthetic and fire safety requirements without creating a permanent visible barrier around the beachfront property.
Solution
After nearly two years of evaluating flood mitigation options, Allegro selected AquaFence to provide an engineered, full-perimeter flood protection system.
The solution combines AquaFence FloodWall and FloodBarricade technology to create approximately 870 linear feet of protection around the property. The system is engineered for a design water level of up to six feet.
By creating a perimeter around the building, the system is designed to help protect residences, common areas and critical infrastructure against future storm surge and flooding.
The modular barriers can be stored out of sight when they are not required, allowing Allegro to preserve the appearance and accessibility of the property under normal conditions. The installation also incorporates AquaFence egress technology, designed to maintain designated exit points for residents while the flood protection system is deployed.
Collaboration
Allegro became the first condominium in Naples to navigate the city approval process for an AquaFence installation.
AquaFence engineers and project representatives worked closely with Allegro’s leadership and city building, planning and fire officials throughout an extensive review. The teams addressed considerations including engineering, anchoring, aesthetics, deployment procedures and resident egress.
This collaboration resulted in approval for Allegro’s system and helped familiarize local officials with the technology. The process may also provide a useful framework for other condominium associations in Naples and across coastal Florida considering similar flood protection measures.
On August 27, 2026, AquaFence engineers and training specialists worked alongside Allegro personnel to conduct a full test installation and training exercise. The exercise simulated deployment conditions and trained the team to assemble, operate and repack the system efficiently ahead of a future storm.

Results
Allegro now has a comprehensive flood protection system and a trained team prepared to deploy it when severe weather threatens.
The completed project provides:

Protection intended for residences, common areas and critical building infrastructure
Designated resident exit points during deployment
Modular barriers that remain out of sight when not in use
