Tampa General Hospital

Project scope
Tampa General Hospital is a 1,101 bed hospital with over 8,000 team members. A key hospital in the region, who needs to provide full service while protecting their patients, staff, and critical equipment. The campus has elevation changes throughout so V1200 (4’), V1500 (5’), V1800 (6’), V2100 (7’), V2400 (8’), and V2700 (9’) FloodWalls are used in areas across the entire facility to meet the desired flood protection height.

Tampa General Hospital (TGH), located on Davis Island in Tampa, Florida, serves as a critical healthcare provider for the western Florida region. With 1,101 beds and over 8,000 team members, TGH is a regional trauma and burn center that also provides specialized care to infants, children, and adults in need of emergency services. As one of the most vital hospitals in the area, TGH must remain operational, even in the face of extreme weather and rising flood risks.
Recognizing the urgency to protect both lives and assets, TGH took proactive steps to ensure its facilities would remain safeguarded during severe flooding events. The hospital turned to AquaFence to provide a robust flood protection solution tailored to the campus’s specific needs. AquaFence designed a system that not only protected patients, staff, and critical equipment, but also minimized disruption to hospital operations.
In a 2024 flooding the hospital CEO stated that while the AquaFence FloodWalls kept the flood waters at bay the hospital conducted 15 surgeries, amongst them one heart transplant, all of which would be impossible without the protection from AquaFence. -
TGH’s main challenges included:
✔️ Protecting key hospital areas, such as the ICU, trauma center, and pediatric wards, from floodwaters.
✔️ Addressing elevation changes across the sprawling campus, which required customized flood barriers for different areas.
✔️ Ensuring a quick deployment process that wouldn’t interfere with the hospital’s critical, round-the-clock operations. -
To meet the hospital’s specific needs, AquaFence delivered a customized solution that included:
✔️ A range of barrier heights (4’ to 9’) for various campus elevation levels, including V1200, V1500, V1800, V2100, V2400, and V2700 FloodWalls.
✔️ Strategic placement of barriers to protect critical areas like operating rooms, trauma units, and patient care facilities, while ensuring uninterrupted hospital operations.✔️ Rapid deployment and simple installation of flood barriers, allowing TGH to respond immediately to flood risks without compromising the hospital’s ability to care for patients.
-
With AquaFence’s flood protection system in place, Tampa General Hospital now has:
✔️ Reliable flood defense ensuring the hospital remains operational even during extreme flooding events.
✔️ Rapid deployment of barriers that protect vulnerable areas, including critical care zones and trauma units.
✔️ Custom-designed flood barriers that adapt to the hospital’s unique campus layout, providing long-term resilience against future flood risks.CEO: during the last flood, while protected by AquaFence, the hospital executed 30 critical surgeries, including one heart transplant
Thanks to AquaFence’s solution, TGH continues to provide life-saving services without interruption, safeguarding both patients and assets in the face of unpredictable weather events.
