Basel


Problem
The city of Basel has one such river tunnel running under the city and 1,4km of this tunnel was in need of maintenance and the tunnel entrance needed enlargement to increase the maintenance challenges in the river tunnel.

Their goal was to funnel the incoming river water along one side of the tunnel to make a dry and safe zone where maintenance and repairs could be done. And they require a solution which would stay functioning for the entirety of the maintenance project, which was planned to take two years.

 

Procedure
AquaFence was provided with a wide range of drawings of the tunnel, which helped us grasp the layout and various challenges throughout the tunnel. We conducted two site reviews to ensure all details and challenges were orderly considered and documented.

Solution
To fully protect the workers against the fast moving river water, AquaFence delivered a combination of standard barriers and custom engineered Barriers.

The project was cost optimized and AquaFence delivered 200 meters of flood mitigation equipment to the city of Basel. This allowed the project to be done in seven stages, tackling 200 meters of maintenance at the time.

 

Result/Benefit
The high safety margins in the AquaFence product design allowed the maintenance works to work safely from the several cubic meters of water running through the tunnel every second, and the simplicity of the product made it easy for the workers to understand and operate the flood barriers

 

Massport


Problem:
Massport short for Massachusetts Port Authority put out a tender for flood products to protect various utility buildings by the airport, and harbor in Boston. Sandy was not a problem in Boston, but had it changed direction it could have been. This barrier is part of a major effort to their part to never flood again.

Procedure:
The key to AquaFence with any urban environment is to have minimal impact to the hardscape or building design. AquaFence is perfect for a retrofitting as it does not require major changes to either 

 

Solution:
All of the concerns were solved in both projects to onsite review of the property and several meetings with engineers to find a solution that would be effective and at the same time nor disturb normal course of business unless the storm approached.

Result/Benefits:
Can withstand another surge like Sandy and still be operational when the water recedes without any casualties

Sanford Health, North Dakota


Problem:
The reproductive unit was completely wasted by flood in Fargo 2010. All equipment on ground floor was ruined by the flood.

Procedure:
Site review and agreement on solution as well as the use of bob cat to even out curbs and other sharp elevation differences.

Solution:
Full perimeter protection where the entrances was left open by removing three panels in front which can be quickly deployed.

Result/Benefits:
Full building protection.

Manhattan 2 Water Street


Problem:
Sandy has caused $15 Million USD damage to the building.

Procedure:
Reviewed the building to find the optimal solution, including minimizing the use of DOT property. The solution also included custom parts that had to be measured on site.

Solution:
Full perimeter protection around the whole building in a mix of 2,1 and 1,8 meter height. Entrance could easily be opened for free entrance until the water reached the building. 

Result/Benefits:
Can protect themselves against another Sandy hurricane.

Nestlé


Solution:
In one case the system was installed in 0,7 meter deep water. Done through the use of a barge, lowering as sea cable.

Result/Benefits:
Could reopen flooded factory three months earlier than other factories despite already being flooded.

Problem:
Several factories in Thailand (2011), some already flooded and others threatened. Needed quickly assembly to be able to reassemble at another site as necessary.

Procedure:
Helped client analyze optimal solutions and helped install on site.
